Johan Huss: We have just announced the totally new Internet Explorer Mobile 6 that will be available from device manufacturers early 2009. Flash player is integrated, improved AJAX support and lots of more, here are some additional information http://blogs.compactframework.de/Peter.Nowak/2008/11/12/Internet+Explorer+6+Mobile+Announced.aspx
Johan Huss: Partners are key to the success of Windows Mobile and we beleive it is important that partners are able to innovate and provide their unique expereince. The end user can always switch back to the Microsoft provided experience, Windows Mobile applications are compatible between any device and there is a standard set of applications. In that we can provide consistency for the end user at the same time as there is a unique “device experience”.
Johan Huss: We are very positive about the future for Windows Mobile, today we have more than 50 OEM partners relasing products based on Windows Mobile, thousands of 3rd party applications that runs on any Windows Mobile device. To provide a seemless experience for familar applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook is unique for Windows Mobile. Moving forward we also see stronger connections also to more consumer oriented services.
Johan Huss: We are constantly innovating on Windows Mobile and as such we?re always working on future versions but nothing to announce today.
Johan Huss: We have worked togheter with mobile software distribution partners for many years ensuring there is a great mobile application and installation experience. This is offered on many Windows Moible devices in market today, either via mobile operators, OEMs or directly from the software distributor.
Johan Huss: We have 2 versions of Windows Mobile. Standard which is optimized for keypad interaction and no touch screen. Professional which is optimized for stylus input. With the latest updates to Windows Mobile 6.1 combined with innovative soltions from device makers the latest generation of deivces have several examples where UI interaction, typing etc works very well wihtout a stylus pen. Also, on new high resolution devices it might be a good idea to increase the font size in the control panel if text looks small.
Nokia: Kommer der en Nokia med Windows Mobile 7? Hilsen nogen
Johan Huss: We would love to see as many Windows Mobile partners as possible but have no new announcements at this point.
Arne: Could you eloborate a bit about the status on Silverlight for mobile devices. (is it Beta, Production ready or ?). Any experience so far?
Johan Huss: Our development team is working hard to finalize Silverlight for Mobile,we showed a preview at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) a few weeks ago and are pushing towards the final release, some more details can be found here http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2008/11/04/silverlight-2-for-mobile.aspx
Johan Huss: We had a similar question a little earlier, originally we deisgned WIndows Mobile Professional (touchscreen) for interaction wiht a stylus (pen) but with recent evolvement of mobile handsets we are also adjusting Windows Mobile to provide a great touch and gesture experience. This is used in some recent devices
Tjavs: Hvad tror I bliver 2009s helt store ting?
Johan Huss: More and better interaction with online services which also can take advantage of the specific information that a mobile can provide. E.g. position, direction, presence etc. We also belive it is important to porivde choice on terms of device, touchscreen, qwerty keyboard or keypad but still be able to have a rich interaction.
Jesper: Will Windows Mobile 6.5 be an incremental update, with minor tweaks or will we see a drastic UI enhancement suitable for a touch phone world? Also will it be possible to upgrade existing 6.1 devices to 6.5?
Johan Huss: I don’t have any news on future versions today. I can comment on updgrades in genreral terms: When we release new version of Windows Mobile to device manufacturers (OEMs) the OEM have the possiblity to proivde updates to exisiting devices. If the OEM choses to do so depends on many factors including hardware compatibility and customer expectations and we have many examples for instance in the version shift from Windows Mobile 6 to 6.1 where updates were released for devices in market.
Tobias K: Hvad bliver det store nye i Windows Mobile 6.5?
Johan Huss: No new announcements at this point.
Johan Huss: We are very excited over the recent evolution of mobile devices and also believe we have great model where both Microsoft and partners can leverage their strenghts to provide a great experience.
I må alle have en god weekend!
